Meet Brooke Robinson: The high-flying graduate who recently landed a job with Air New Zealand
Brooke Robinson is a keen traveller and ITC graduate who recently got a job with Air New Zealand.
Brooke Robinson is one of ITC’s lovely Christchurch graduates who graduated in late 2019. She completed both her Level 3 and Level 4 Certificates with ITC and attained Distinction with both.
Not to mention, she was also awarded the academic excellence award and was one of the student representatives for her class during level 4 as well.
Brooke grew up in a travel-loving household with both parents in the industry, and was always interested in following in their footsteps. After graduating ITC, she spent a year working in real estate, but always wanted to get back to tourism, so recently applied for a role with Air New Zealand – and landed it.
So of course, we interviewed Brooke to learn more about her new job.
Congratulations on the job! Was it always a dream to work with an airline?
I had always had a keen interest in working for an airline but I didn’t really know which part of an airline I would most want to work in.
While studying at ITC you learn about a roles throughout the industry you never would have known about. Working ground crew for an airline was definitely something that piqued my interest and I was fortunate enough to complete my 1 week work experience placement during Level 4 with Plane Biz, which is a Christchurch company who has contracts to complete check in, ground operations, loading and more with a lot of major overseas airlines such as Emirates, Qantas and Singapore Airlines.
It was during this week that it solidified for me that this was in fact the job I see myself doing in the future. Since then I have worked hard to ensure I have the skills and experience to land the role when the opportunity presented itself.
How was ITC (and the lovely Nicky) involved in helping you get the role?
When you finish at ITC, they never forget about you! There is always ongoing support for you from ITC well after you graduate.
Nicky kept me in mind when new jobs were advertised and I was always checking the ITC Jobs Facebook page too. When I saw this role, I emailed Nicky and she helped me look over my CV before I submitted my application. She also sent a letter of recommendation on behalf of ITC to go alongside my application. The ITC workbooks were also a great help for preparing for my interview too so be sure to keep those and review them when you head for an interview yourself!
What will you be doing for Air New Zealand?
My position with Air New Zealand is a Customer Service Agent at Christchurch Airport, which comes with a variety of duties and responsibilities.
What are your ultimate career goals?
While studying, this is the role I saw myself in in the future and with everything that has happened over the last 2 years, I am very thankful that this has been possible for me.
For now I am very happy to be where I am but perhaps in a few years’ time, if the opportunity came, I would love to continue to grow within Air New Zealand and potentially transfer to other airports around the world to continue to deliver the exceptional Kiwi service while experiencing other cultures and cities at the same time.
Do you have any advice for current and future ITC students?
My advice would be to put yourself out there and enjoy the journey. The time you have with ITC is invaluable and you will learn an incredible amount from the tutors, other students, guest speakers and the course material. Be sure to ask questions, build and maintain positive connections and have fun!
