Pandemic drives new interest in learning and upskilling

Posted on 27/10/2021 by

Throughout the pandemic, many have found a new interest in learning and upskilling.

Throughout the pandemic, many New Zealanders and people all over the world have discovered a new-found interest in upskilling and learning new things.

We all remember when many Kiwis (some of us included!) tried their hands at making home-made bread during the first lockdown, and trying all sorts of new recipes. But the interest in learning and upskilling doesn’t stop at delicious treats.

Many people have taken this time to learn something new for their careers.

Upskilling through the pandemic

During the first lockdown, comparison site Finder ran a survey on New Zealanders and found that 25% wanted to take the time to do some form of study. That’s roughly a million Kiwis seeking to learn.

For some, that was in order to change their career, while others were interested in order to avoid unemployment.

This trend has continued across the past 18 months.

In September, Pluralsight released their 2021 State of Upskilling report. This report surveyed hundreds of executives in a number of different countries, and found that half of respondents (51%) said that their organisations made upskilling a priority in 2020 when working from home became commonplace.

Additionally, financial technology group Zip Co has seen “record levels” of attendance and engagement with their virtual learning opportunities. So much so, that they have launched a 10-week training program that has been extremely well received by their teams.
