Posted on 12/04/2023 by Hayley ClarkIs someone in your family earning a qualification with Study From Home? Or even studying any course or completing schoolwork from home?
Even though the student will be doing the work, there’s a lot of responsibility in being their parent or caregiver, too. It’s up to you to support them and ensure they have the space to complete their studies.
Here are our top tips for anyone looking after or living with a remote learner.
Create a space for their studies
If you have ever worked from home, or simply tried to manage paperwork from the dining table, you’ll know the importance of having a quiet, tidy space to concentrate.
It’s no different for remote learners. Create a space in the home where they can focus in peace and quiet.
For example, if they share a room with a sibling, perhaps you can set them up in your bedroom so they can study in a private area.
Or, if there isn’t anywhere private for them in the home, ensure other family members respect the student’s study time with quiet activities in the background.
Don’t distract them
Many people who study or work from home have to contend with distractions. It’s one thing to ignore a TV making noise in the background, but it’s impossible to ignore a family member asking questions, making demands, or asking if they want to go out and do something.
It can also be easy to see someone sitting on their laptop and assume they aren’t busy, but it’s important to remember that they are likely working or studying.
Therefore, act as if their space is actually an office space and they are busy at work. Only disturb them with emergencies, and save any news, questions, or tasks until later.
Help them in other areas
You might not be able to help them work their way through activities or remember new information, but you can help them in other areas of their life.
For example, making a healthy, nutritious dinner might ensure they don’t resort to fast food if they’re too busy studying to cook something. Doing their laundry with your own can give them more time to focus on their learning and not have to worry about chores.
By taking on some of their tasks, you can help to free up their time and mental load so they can better focus on their learning.
Be interested
Showing your interest in their studies can be a great way to show your support. It will ensure they know you’re following their journey and rooting for them to succeed.
Not to mention, it can help them to remember the material if they talk about what they’re learning to someone else.
Supporting our remote learners
At Study From Home, we don’t just leave it up to friends and family to support our learners – we also offer plenty of support through the Study From Home programme as well.
Our team of dedicated tutors are available by email and phone, and students can also make face-to-face appointments as well. This means that students can ask questions and chat any time they need to.
These support systems – both online and at home – can help ensure our students not only complete their qualifications, but enjoy their time with us, and go on to land exciting industry roles.
