You are worth it! The ITC and Study From Home team shares wisdom and inspiration

Posted on 15/06/2023 by

The entire team at ITC and Study From Home supports you and believes in you. Today we’re sharing our top inspirational quotes and knowledge to help you in your journey!

One of the many special parts about being a student with ITC or Study From Home is that the tutors, advisors, employment consultants – the entire team – truly cares about your journey.

We often interview graduates to share their stories, and that often happens because we’re keeping in touch anyway. This is a college where the team regularly goes above and beyond to help you through your studies, support you in your job search, and celebrate with you in your successes.

So to remind you of just how much you’re worth it, the team got together to share their incredible wisdom, things they have learned from their careers, and favourite inspirational quotes.

Takeyuki Morita, Tourism Management Tutor

Sometimes it is hard to believe in yourself, and instead of trying, you may stop taking action and just want to say, “I would never be able to do that” or, “I will never be able to cope with that.”

This can happen when you are scared of trying something new or unexpectedly face several challenges at the same time. But who knows that you cannot!? You may overestimate the challenges and/or underestimate your ability to cope with them. By deciding for yourself that you will try, facing the challenge, and moving forward, you will develop lots of skill sets that you will value in your life. That’s when you will find out you are much more capable than you thought before. Yes, your limits can be illusions, but your power to overcome them is real.

Take also shared a quote by Michael Jordan – “Never say never, because limits, like fears, are often just an illusion.”

Lynelle Panton, Distance Learning Tutor

“I am a firm believer in baby steps. Chipping away at something will often give you better progress as you spend the time getting a good understanding of what it is you are learning and let it really sink in. Rushing often results in not really understanding and mistakes being made.”

She also shared “A little progress each day adds up to big results” – Satya Nani

Esther Johnston,  Schools Coordinator

“Practice makes progress. Not perfect.”

Mel Jenkins, Tutor & Marketing Manager

“Education is the key to unlocking the world, a passport to freedom.” – Oprah Winfrey

Claire Huxley, CEO

“Do not be embarrassed by your failures, learn from them and start again” – Richard Branson

“If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity but you are not sure you can do it, say yes – then learn how to do it later!” – Richard Branson

Claire chose these two quotes because they both speak to a growth mindset and highlight that accepting mistakes are good. She pointed out that that’s how we learn – and grow!

Unable to help herself, Claire added one more!: “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I will learn.”

John Armstrong, Tutor

“When advanced selling, show your company how to play chess while others are just playing checkers. Selling involves thinking ahead for your customer – do your best for them they will remember you for it.”

Michelle Chatfield, City Campus Manager

“When I look back and think about all the different jobs I have done in the past, every one of them has taught me something and helped me to get to where I am today. A big part of that for me is something I have always tried to follow ‘to never stop learning as life never stops teaching!’…and I still am.”

Laura Orsbourn, Tutor

“When you’re nervous about stepping outside of your comfort zone, remind yourself: It feels scary because it’s unfamiliar, not because I’m incapable” – Michael C. Clark

Vi Tran, Tutor

“It is better to conquer yourself than to win a thousand battles.”

Sarndra Stephens, Employment Consultant

NO means Next Opportunity. I have discovered that although I may have been upset, mad or emotional in some way about a NO, it has often turned out that the Next Opportunity was worth waiting for or working towards as it was better than the one I got the NO for.

So if there are any NO’s, fails or falters then take  a moment, learn what you can from what happened, reset and go again.”

Michelle Newsome, Tourism Educator (Schools Team)

“The greatest adventure is what lies ahead. Today and tomorrow are yet to be said. The chances, the changes are all yours to make. The mold of your life is in your hands to break.” J.R.R. Tolkien

“Sometimes the smallest step in the right direction ends up being the biggest step of your life. Tip toe if you must but take the step.”

Michelle explained her choice of these quotes, saying “the smallest step one I like, it helps when change can seem overwhelming and things start piling up and seem too big a challenge. But one little step is all you need to start.

I’m a Tolkien nerd so love the ones from those stories about adventures. Helps when you’re feeling a bit stuck in life, makes you realise that the main thing holding you back is you. If you want something enough then it’s up to you to get there.”

Jackie Faamausili, tutor

“It doesn’t matter what others are doing, it matters what you are doing.”

Jae Govender, tutor

“Your future is created by what you do today, not tomorrow.”

Toni Young, distance study tutor

“There is only one way to eat an elephant: one bite at a time.” – Desmond Tutu

Motivated mum of 7 sets up home office in wardrobe

Now this is what we call Kiwi ingenuity! Michelle’s innovative home office is a shining example of ‘when there is a will, there is a way”.

Where do you go when you want some peace and quiet away from your children? Why, the wardrobe, of course!

When Michelle Laidlaw decided to study from home, she knew she would need a secluded place where she could concentrate on her work without distractions. So the motivated mother of seven got creative and converted her bedroom wardrobe into a cosy home office.

“With my course related costs I brought myself a new computer and measured up my wardrobe. I then drove to the Warehouse Stationery with my tape measure in order to find a desk that would fit into my wardrobe so I could close the doors when not in use,” Michelle explained.
