Do I have to be a teenager to study?

Posted on 29/03/2023 by

You don’t have to be a teenager to study with us!

One of the most common questions we receive here at Study From Home is, ‘am I too old to study?’.

At ITC, many of our students tend to come straight from high school. But with Study From Home, we love seeing many students enrol later in life, often after taking a break from work to take care of family, or for a career change.

So the answer is, no, you don’t have to be a teenager. You can study with us at any age! In fact, having a few more years can even be a bonus when it’s time to start job hunting.

Many companies like to hire older people who have some life experience, especially for travel and tourism. This is an industry where you’ll be dealing with people all the time, problem solving, and learning to go with the flow – all things you’ll likely have some experience with after some time in the ‘real world’!

To prove our point, we spoke to one of our recent graduates, Deborah Pritchard. Deborah is 60 years young, and excited to start her career in travel and tourism!

Here’s her story.

Meet adult learner Deborah Pritchard

“I have worked in Hospitality and Retail Management for 20 years, and I have enjoyed working in a team environment and with customers. I have always had a desire to travel the world, to experience and learn about different cultures, history, architecture, and scenery.

I finally got the chance to start my travel journey back in 2016 and have had the opportunity to visit a few countries now, and have so much more I want to still see.

This is where I decided I wanted to help others experience the wonders of the world like I have been able to. I was lucky enough to have a travel agent who was amazing, she was supportive, and was there to answer any questions I had. As it was my very first trip alone, I didn’t know anything, or where to even start planning. She explained everything in detail, shared her own experiences and gave me advice which made me feel at ease and gave me a lot more confidence to do this.

I want to be that person to put customers at ease, to help plan amazing holidays, make them stress-free and be a support system so they don’t feel alone, and share my knowledge and experience.

I decided to research the best way to get qualifications in Travel and Tourism. Studying from home seemed my best option at the time for me as I had other family commitments where I was needed.

I came across ITC The International Travel College of New Zealand, found what I was looking for and the excitement for this journey was so high. So I signed up for Certificate 4 in Travel and couldn’t wait to start!

My highlights from studying were how much I learnt from the subjects, how easy it was to follow each unit, it was step by step and the support system from tutors was amazing. So quick to respond and so helpful.

Now I have completed my course, my next step is to find my dream job: to join a company as a travel agent/consultant. I want to be able to help people make amazing memories of their lives.

My advice to others about studying at home would be “just do it”, you won’t regret it. It has been the best decision and experience I have had.

From my experience, a couple of tips for online learners would be:

  • Make sure you have a little study space with no distractions.
  • Make sure you take breaks, even if it’s only 10 mins every 2-3hrs helps so much.
  • Make a plan of what your study hours are going to be during the day, and try to stick to it.
  • Also, remember you can achieve anything you put your mind to!

I am 60 years young and I haven’t let anything get in the way of my dreams and goals. I am so excited to get out in the workforce in my dream job and to keep travelling the world!!”

It’s never too late to follow your dreams
